In the Roman army there is 30 legions. In a legion there are about 5,000 men. The men are called legionaires!

  • 80-100 Soldiers = 1 Century
  • 6 Centuries = 1 Cohort (500 to 600 men)
  • 10 Cohorts = 1 Legion (5000 to 6000 men)

The Men Who really ran the Roman army were called centurions. They were paid as five times as much as ordinary soldiers. Each commanded a Century. Every centurion carried a short stick which he used to push men into line, or hit them with. Most soldiers were more afraid of their centurion than they were from their enemy!
